Facility Secretary Kjell Grinden enjoys the university's international atmosphere and concrete, varied work.
鈥淚鈥檝e driven around this campus so many times that I know it inside and out,鈥 says Facility Secretary Kjell Grinden, describing his career at the 91天美.
Currently, Grinden鈥檚 main duties involve the processing of applications for facility access rights and keys to the university's buildings. Applications are submitted by both staff and students, as well as by people outside the university. He also attends to the Timecon system, where the alarms and electronic doors of the buildings are managed. Various requests for maintenance, facility access rights and automatic locking of doors pass through Grinden鈥檚 desk.
鈥淭his is very meaningful, concrete and varied work, although I sometimes miss the driving.鈥
Straight to work from a language course
Grinden鈥檚 career at the university started some 20 years ago. The reason for his arrival in eastern Finland was his Finnish, then soon-to-be wife, whom Grinden had met in his home country, Norway. At first, the young couple lived in Norway, but decided to come to Finland for a year.
鈥淚 took a job alternation leave from my work in Norway and began studying Finnish in Joensuu.鈥
The year passed, but the Grinden family no longer felt like they wanted to go back.
鈥淭he language course organised by Aducate included an internship that I completed at Joensuu University Press, which at the time was still located on campus. My internship at the University Press went so smoothly that I ended up getting a real contract of employment.鈥
Grinden got to work in the University Press for four years, up until its operations on campus were closed down. After that, Grinden became a facilities management officer, with his responsibilities including mail and chauffeuring.
鈥淚 did a lot of chauffeuring for Perttu Vartiainen, the university鈥檚 Rector at the time. Perttu would often sit in the back working, and I remember him giving multiple interviews and statements to journalists from the back seat. But we had plenty of time to talk during those trips, and we always had a really nice time.鈥
Since then, Grinden鈥檚 responsibilities as a facilities management officer were focused on the Aurora Building and, more recently, to the university鈥檚 Keys Office - right when the COVID-19 lockdown started. Facilities Management Services was one of the few units to remain on campus when everyone else switched to remote work.
鈥淭here鈥檚 a really good atmosphere in our unit, and we have a very particular sense of humour. No one can manage everything alone: it's all about working together. And it's not just within our own walls, since we have a lot of external partners, too.鈥
The very variety of different professions at the university makes each day here an interesting one.

Feeling at home in an international environment
Grinden says he is lucky to have found a job so quickly after moving to Finland. As far as language is concerned, he says he's already a Finn: he thinks in Finnish and dreams in Finnish. Nowadays when he visits Norway, he sometimes has difficulty finding words in his mother tongue.
鈥淚 like the university's international atmosphere and the fact that I can also use English in my work, and sometimes even Swedish or a mixture of the Scandinavian languages.鈥
At first, Grinden says he sought the company of fellow foreigners and felt a kindred of spirit with people speaking a language other than Finnish.
鈥淣ow, I feel so Finnish that I don't really notice the language around me anymore.鈥
To his three daughters, however, Grinden still speaks Norwegian so that they will have the benefit of being bilingual.
Broad range of professions makes daily life interesting
Grinden says he likes the fact that there are so many different professions at the university.
鈥淪till, many seem surprised to learn that the university also employs people like me, i.e., those who look after the university's facilities. Our supporting role is nevertheless important: if the chain of service is broken at any point, everyone鈥檚 work becomes more difficult.鈥
That鈥檚 why Grinden holds everyone鈥檚 work in equal value, be the person a chauffeur or a professor.
鈥淭he very variety of different professions at the university makes each day here an interesting one.鈥
