Irene Ylönen, Master of Arts, has been appointed as the new Director of the 91 Library. Ylönen currently works as the Director of the Open Science Centre of the University of Jyväskylä. Ylönen will start in her new role on 1 August 2025.
Irene Ylönen has acted as the Director of the Open Science Centre of the University of Jyväskylä since 14 April 2024 and, before that, she was the Acting Director of the Centre. Her other previous posts include Service Manager at the Open Science Centre and various roles at the Jyväskylä University Library, including Informant Specialist and Librarian.
We at UEF are very pleased to have Irene Ylönen, who has experience in the management of a university library, as our new Director of the Library. She has very valuable views on how to develop the Library to support the future learning and research environments of the university, says Vice Rector for Research Jussi Pihlajamäki.
Irene Ylönen, the new Director of the UEF Library, is looking forward to this new phase of her life with enthusiasm and positive excitement.
– I will be transferring from a multidisciplinary university to an even more multidisciplinary university, so I will be facing many new things in the form of new disciplines and their research and studying practices, says Ylönen.
– I want to lead the library in a fair and transparent manner through cooperation because for me, working together not only within the Library but also within the entire academic community is very important and valuable, says Ylönen.
Ylönen emphasises the role of a scientific library as an information hub at the university. – By reflecting on this idea and developing the activities together, we at the Library will be able to produce services that help students, researchers and teachers in their work. These services will also bring visibility to the university and the research findings that it produces, as well as tools for the university’s leadership to support management, says Ylönen.
In Ylönen’s view, the role of the Library is very important for the entire university, both as a developer of new things and as a unit that implements its basic tasks in a wise manner.
– The world around us is constantly changing at a great speed. The Library also acts as the eyes and ears of the academic community and sees and hears the direction in which the world is developing, for example, as regards changes in open science or the information environment.
Ylönen will work mainly on the Kuopio campus, but will also be present on the Joensuu campus both virtually and physically.
– As a rule, a multi-location campus is a new concept for me and I am looking forward to exploring, with the staff of the Library, how the multi-location aspect is currently seen by the working community and how communality is maintained and built despite the physical distance, says Ylönen.
