Simona Jankova, a student of Master's Degree Programme in Research Chemists shares her journey. Drawn to natural sciences and inspired by women in STEM, Simona chose UEF for its excellent research opportunities. Her experiences, from working in advanced labs to witnessing the northern lights, have shaped her aspirations in sustainable materials and innovative technologies.
"I have always been drawn to science and fascinated by how the world works at a fundamental level," says Simona Jankova, a student of Master's Degree in Research Chemists programme. Her curiosity and love for natural sciences, combined with a strong interest in math, naturally led her to chemistry. "Reading about inspiring women in STEM further fueled my passion, and before I knew it, I was on this path," she adds.
Why UEF?
Drawn to new experiences, Simona always wanted to study in a Nordic country and immerse herself in its unique lifestyle. "Finland’s excellent research opportunities in chemistry and strong support for students made UEF the perfect choice," she explains. Despite never having lived in such a cold place, she saw it as an exciting challenge—and it has been an incredible journey.
"I have really enjoyed the diversity at UEF, both in terms of people and academic opportunities," Simona shares. Working in well-equipped labs with advanced instruments has been a great experience, giving her the chance to put theory into practice. "The hands-on learning environment has been both challenging and rewarding, and the supportive, international atmosphere makes studying even more inspiring," she notes.
Memorable Moments in Finland
"The most memorable moment was seeing the Northern Lights on my very first night in Finland. The sky was glowing green, and it looked like something out of a movie—so surreal," Simona recalls. Over the past two years, she has kept seeing them, and it has become a habit to search for them every time she is out with friends. "Each time, it still feels magical and never loses its charm," she says.
"The best thing about Finland is its balance between nature and modern life—beautiful forests, lakes, and peaceful surroundings combined with excellent education and opportunities," Simona observes. In Joensuu, she loves the sense of community and how easy it is to enjoy outdoor activities in every season. "The friendly and welcoming atmosphere makes it a great place to study and live," she adds.
Encouragement for Prospective Students
"Studying at UEF is challenging but definitely worth it. The university has so much to offer, from a wide range of classes to sports opportunities, and the Finnish people are really passionate about sports," Simona advises. "The culture here is unique, quite different from anywhere else, and the nature and fresh air make it an amazing place to live and study. You'll meet incredible people and grow in ways you never expected!"
After graduation, Simona plans to pursue career opportunities in research and development, focusing on sustainable materials and innovative technologies. "I want to apply my skills to projects that make a meaningful impact on both the environment and society," she says. Gaining international experience is also something she is excited about, as it will allow her to learn from different cultures and challenges and contribute to scientific advancements that truly make a difference.
"I would encourage anyone to take a step out of their comfort zone and embrace new challenges. It’s easy to stick with what’s familiar, but pushing yourself to try something different can lead to incredible personal and professional growth," Simona advises. "Whether it’s studying in a new country, trying out a new subject, or meeting people from all over the world, these experiences shape you in ways you never expected and open doors to opportunities you wouldn’t have imagined."
