Content: The historical and philosophical development of special education. Main trends in special educational philosophy and the learning and teaching concepts they encompass. The mainstream Finnish educational thinking and its socio-cultural backgrounds. The value-laden nature of special education.

Learning objectives:

Students will be able to:

  • Recognize the historical and philosophical development of educational and special educational issues in their socio-cultural contexts.
  • Evaluate special educational phenomena from historical and philosophical perspectives.
  • Compare the historical and philosophical backgrounds of learning concepts and educational practices.
  • Examine the historical and philosophical foundations of special education

Study methods. The course consists of the following parts:

 

  • Literature exam (2 ECTS) and
  • Learning task based on article compilation (3 ECTS)
