Popular Photonics Master of Science programme's course Applications of Photonics at the , the 91天美, will be held this year as a series of hybrid lectures hosted by Professor Jyrki Saarinen on Joensuu campus and online in Microsoft Teams. The course is organized in collaboration with and .

lectures focus on practical applications of photonics from an industrial point of view. Key professionals from various companies give presentations regarding their businesses, technologies and applications in 30-minute lectures, and participants can discuss the themes further in the following 15-minute Q&A sessions. A total of 22 companies are invited, each from a distinct sub field of photonics. Some of the lectures are also included in the , and Working Life Week.

The lectures will be given in English and streamed online via Microsoft Teams. Participation on lectures is free and open for everyone, though mandatory for students taking the course.

The company lectures have started on 23.10.2023. Moreover, typically two presentations are held in various locations and online three times per week until 27.11. as follows:

  • Mondays at 14:15-16:00
  • Wednesdays at 10:15-12:00
  • Thursdays at 12:15-14:00

Invited lecturers: ZEISS, Ledil, Dispelix, XR-labra, VTT, Valoe, Modulight, Murata, Ecoaims, Marginum, Arbonaut, Senop, Vaisala, Maculaser, Sensmet, Visual Festival light artists, Thalesgroup, Nanocomp, and Spectromics lab.

Products and applications include: Architectural lighting, environmental monitoring, water analysis, augmented reality glasses and headsets, Atomic Layer Deposition ALD, hyperspectral imaging (also space-borne imaging and plant imaging), forest inventory and natural resource management, health monitoring, healthcare technology, paper machine, optics manufacturing and assembly, optical sensors, surgery, laser and optical shooting, securing identity documents, optics communications, optics for flat displays, and security and bullet-proof glasses.
