Choosing UEF: A unique academic structure
"I decided on UEF first of all because of the structure of the programme," Frieda explains. "The offer of courses and electives convinced me and was unique in comparison to other similar Master’s programmes in Environmental Law." Her decision was also influenced by her previous exchange year in Joensuu, where she experienced Finland’s education system firsthand. "The academic freedom and the equal relationship with professors was something I really enjoyed. For me, this way of studying was much more convincing than static lectures and exams."
When asked what she values most about her experience, Frieda highlights two things: "Academic freedom and student life." She appreciates the flexibility in her studies and the welcoming, inclusive atmosphere among students. One of her favorite traditions is the Social Mixers organized by her law programme each semester. "It’s a great way for new and old students to meet and enjoy fun evenings at Bar Play."

Living in Joensuu: Nature, culture, and community
Frieda has embraced the lifestyle in Joensuu, especially the easy access to nature. "The fact that the student union ISYY rents out all kinds of winter and sports equipment for free makes it possible to enjoy snowshoe hikes, cross-country skiing, or ice-skating at any time," she says. She also enjoys the city’s youthful energy and cultural offerings, like jam nights at 60’s Palaver and her favorite activity: the public Polar Bear ice swimming sauna in Joensuu.
Frieda encourages others to take the leap: "Do it! Joensuu seems so far away and small at first glance, but it offers so much for students." She praises UEF’s strong academic reputation and the career opportunities it opens up. "UEF has many well-known and experienced professors and researchers, so the chance to build a career in your field is high."
Looking ahead, Frieda is aiming for a PhD and is confident that her time at UEF has prepared her well. "Joensuu is underestimated, and UEF is doing a great job organizing all kinds of events for students, from social activities and sports to career support."
